Animal Farm – George Orwell

3149348Title: Animal Farm

Author: George Orwell

Genre: Literature

Series: n/a

Goodreads Rating: 3.86

Synopsis: “All animals are equal. But some animals are more equal than others.”

One night on an English farm, Major the boar recounts his vision of a utopia where his fellow creatures own the land along with the means of production and are no longer the slaves of humans.

Before long his dream comes true, and for a short while all animals really are equal. But the clever pigs educate themselves and soon learn how to extend their own power, inevitably at the expense of the rest of the community.

This well-loved tale is, of course, a satire on the Soviet Communist system that still remains a powerful warning despite the changes in world politics since “Animal Farm” was first published.

This production is based on Orwell’s own radio version which was first produced in 1947.

What I thought about the book: I think I knew too much about this book before I read it. I found it boring and predictable when it should have been interesting and full of meaning.
I am glad I read it though. It’s something everyone should read I think.

The Trouble with Women Review

29534432Title: The Trouble with Women

Author: Jacky Fleming

Genre: Graphic Novel/Feminism

Goodreads Rating: 4.26/5

Why I read this: I joined NetGalley last night and this book caught my eye it the Read Now section.

Synopsis:
CAN WOMEN BE GENIUSES? OR ARE THEIR ARMS TOO SHORT?
WHY DID WE ONLY LEARN ABOUT THREE WOMEN AT SCHOOL?
WHAT WERE ALL THE OTHERS DOING?The Trouble With Women does for girls what 1066 and All That did for boys: it reminds us of what we were taught about women in history lessons at school, which is to say, not a lot. A brilliantly witty book of cartoons, it reveals some of our greatest thinkers’ baffling theories about women. We learn that even Charles Darwin, long celebrated for his open, objective scientific mind, believed that women would never achieve anything important, because of their smaller brains.Get ready to laugh, wince and rescue forgotten women from the ‘dustbin of history’, whilst keeping a close eye out for tell-tale ‘genius hair’. You will never look at history in the same way again.

What I thought about the book:
The book is entertaining and funny but a bit repetitive.

as I read…Forever Fae

18c298c57b2e211c99347015eaf4775bReading Forever Fae by L.P. Dover today. This only the second series I’ve ever read that centres on the fae. The first was Merry Gentry by Laurell K. Hamilton. Anyone who has ever read her work will know her books are pretty much just about sex. In spite of that, though, I really enjoyed her series (until the most recent book). I love the creatures in fairytales; brownies, elves, trolls, fairies, etc.

I started Forever Fae last night, so I haven’t formed any solid opinions on it yet. The language is a bit hard to follow, jumps between a modern and fantasy/olden-style dialect. It’s told through 3 points of view (so far anyway) which takes some of the mystery out of the story.

I got this book free on Kobo. I think it’s free on amazon as well at the moment.
