Slade House – David Mitchell

28953095Title: Slade House

Author: David Mitchell

Genre: Horror

Series: n/a

Goodreads Rating: 3.82/5

Synopsis: Keep your eyes peeled for a small black iron door.

Down the road from a working-class British pub, along the brick wall of a narrow alley, if the conditions are exactly right, you’ll find the entrance to Slade House. A stranger will greet you by name and invite you inside. At first, you won’t want to leave. Later, you’ll find that you can’t. Every nine years, the house’s residents—an odd brother and sister—extend a unique invitation to someone who’s different or lonely: a precocious teenager, a recently divorced policeman, a shy college student. But what really goes on inside Slade House? For those who find out, it’s already too late. . . .

Spanning five decades, from the last days of the 1970s to the present, leaping genres, and barreling toward an astonishing conclusion, this intricately woven novel will pull you into a reality-warping new vision of the haunted house story—as only David Mitchell could imagine it.

What I thought about the book: This book sounds so creepy, right?… Well, it’s a little bit meh. It certainly has it’s creepy moments but with the story broken up into a cycle of decades, I felt like I was reading a prologue over and over again. The story only really takes off near the end and then it was really interesting (bit late by then though!).
I found out after reading that this book is set in the same world as The Bone Clocks which I haven’t read. I enjoyed this one enough to get The Bone Clocks, it seems to be a bit more popular (by a bit, I mean double readership).

Eligible – Curtis Sittenfeld

25852870Title: Eligible

Author: Curtis Sittenfeld

Genre: Romance

Series: The Austen Project #4

Goodreads Rating: 3.63/5

Synopsis: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER . . . Wonderfully tender and hilariously funny, Eligible tackles gender, class, courtship, and family as Curtis Sittenfeld reaffirms herself as one of the most dazzling authors writing today.

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR AND THE TIMES (UK)

This version of the Bennet family and Mr. Darcy is one that you have and haven’t met before: Liz is a magazine writer in her late thirties who, like her yoga instructor older sister, Jane, lives in New York City. When their father has a health scare, they return to their childhood home in Cincinnati to help and discover that the sprawling Tudor they grew up in is crumbling and the family is in disarray.

Youngest sisters Kitty and Lydia are too busy with their CrossFit workouts and Paleo diets to get jobs. Mary, the middle sister, is earning her third online master’s degree and barely leaves her room, except for those mysterious Tuesday-night outings she won’t discuss. And Mrs. Bennet has one thing on her mind: how to marry off her daughters, especially as Jane’s fortieth birthday fast approaches.

Enter Chip Bingley, a handsome new-in-town doctor who recently appeared on the juggernaut reality TV dating show Eligible. At a Fourth of July barbecue, Chip takes an immediate interest in Jane, but Chip’s friend, neurosurgeon Fitzwilliam Darcy, reveals himself to Liz to be much less charming. . . . And yet, first impressions can be deceiving.

What I thought about the book: Perfect for a summer holiday book if anyone is looking for one. It’s a nice story about all the relationships we experience in modern life. I think Sittenfeld did a great modernising Pride and Prejudice and I really liked a lot of the changes she made to some of the characters. Catherine de Bourgh, for instance, is much more appealing.
Not my normal choice of book but I enjoyed it.

What I thought about the book: I wanted more from this book!!!! The Thunderbirds seemed like a pointless addition to the world just to have another book in the series. There wasn’t much progress anywhere else except in the worlds most annoying love triangle! Which is still not resolved. The love triangle in this series always seemed really forced to me as well which is probably why it annoys me. I do not understand why Jace is so into her!
As always the action scenes are really good and Faythe is no longer annoying at all.
Good addition to the series, not great but the next book is the last one so I’ll continue.

Goblet of Fire

Title: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Author: J.K. Rowling

Genre: Young Adult Fantasy

Series: Harry Potter #4

Goodreads Rating: 4.52/5

Synopsis: The summer holidays are dragging on and Harry Potter can’t wait for the start of the school year. It is his fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and there are spells to be learnt and (unluckily) Potions and Divination lessons to be attended. But Harry can’t know that the atmosphere is darkening around him, and his worst enemy is preparing a fate that it seems will be inescapable …With characteristic wit, fast-paced humour and marvellous emotional depth, J.K. Rowling has proved herself yet again to be a master story-teller.

What I thought about the book: (I find it so hard to review Harry Potter…so many people have read them and have already formed their opinion it kind of seems pointless…) Amazing book!! We get a bit of fun with the tournament and then it all kicks off. The books get darker and much more serious from here.
When I read the books for the first time, this was my least favourite. I didn’t like the Triwizard Tournament and I was shocked by the character death. I enjoyed it a lot more this time. There’s so much foreshadowing in the books I never noticed before.

Or to put an end to it. Not that Eugenie’s fazed by spilling fey blood, but this enemy is shrewd, subtle, and dangerous — and nursing a very personal grudge.

What I thought about the book: A lot of people don’t know Mead has written series for adults (she wrote Vampire Academy) and this is definitely for adults. There is a lot of sex and sexual situations in this book but it never crosses the line into erotica. Amazingly it all fits the story.
Eugenie is a better rounded character than usually seen in urban fantasy. She kicks ass but she also makes mistakes and not in the stupid way characters do sometimes. She makes an educated mistake.

Wintersong – S. Jae-Jones

24763621Title: Wintersong

Author: S. Jae-Jones

Genre: YA Fantasy

Series: n/a (but I’ve heard there’s a sequel on the way)

Goodreads Rating: 3.68/5

Synopsis: Beware the goblin men and the wares they sell.

All her life, nineteen-year-old Liesl has heard tales of the beautiful, mysterious Goblin King. He is the Lord of Mischief, the Ruler Underground, and the muse around which her music is composed. Yet, as Liesl helps shoulder the burden of running her family’s inn, her dreams of composition and childish fancies about the Goblin King must be set aside in favour of more practical concerns.

But when her sister Käthe is taken by the goblins, Liesl journeys to their realm to rescue her sister and return her to the world above. The Goblin King agrees to let Käthe go—for a price. The life of a maiden must be given to the land, in accordance with the old laws. A life for a life, he says. Without sacrifice, nothing good can grow. Without death, there can be no rebirth. In exchange for her sister’s freedom, Liesl offers her hand in marriage to the Goblin King. He accepts.

Down in the Underground, Liesl discovers that the Goblin King still inspires her—musically, physically, emotionally. Yet even as her talent blossoms, Liesl’s life is slowly fading away, the price she paid for becoming the Goblin King’s bride. As the two of them grow closer, they must learn just what it is they are each willing to sacrifice: her life, her music, or the end of the world.

What I thought about the book: This read like a long analogy for transitioning from girlhood to womanhood. I have nothing against that but I’ve already gone through it and don’t want to reminisce.
Wintersong is often referred to as a retelling of the Labyrinth and there are some similarities but I wouldn’t consider it as such. The feel is very different. The Goblin King here is a more sympathetic character and Liesl is self-sacrificing prior to her sisters kidnapping. I would say it was inspired by the movie, not exactly a retelling.
It was a pretty good book, I can certainly see why it’s so popular, just maybe not for me.
I absolutely adore the cover though!

What I thought about the book: Great addition to the series though I didn’t enjoy it as much as previous books. It was very similar to Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night (Rydstrom even mentions it in the book) but not as good. I found the ending a little anticlimactic but overall it was a fun read.

What I thought about the book: I really enjoyed this though I did have a few issues with Bathsheba’s character. She was just a little too proud for me, it got a bit annoying. Overall the story was great. I love the slow burning romance and the cataclysmic repercussions to people’s actions.
I may do a full review (with spoilers) for this one…
